I just got my tape backup; a piece of cake to install, but somewhat slow (and they did that stupid timing on the retension pass to *force* you to use DC600A cartridges! Grr..) but it beats the dangles off doing a floppy backup on a 67Mb drive. HOWEVER... The backup software is v1.0, and looks like it; it's just not flexible enough, and it makes some assumptions I don't like (i.e., it says it won't backup the foundation set or utilities, assuming you'll do a multi-stage recovery in case of catastrophe--first, reload the set, then utilities, then your files.) Personally, I'd take reloading from tape over a new installation--and I haven't taken the tape scripts apart to see if they honor changed foundation set files (many in my 'ua' directory.) Other things, as well, such as specifying exception files and/or directories to be omitted in a backup pass, etc., are not there--and I don't expect a new version of the software, either. Before I spend my time doing it, has anyone else come up with a more general-purpose set of backup scripts? The major thing I *do* want to preserve is their handling of multiple logical volumes per cartridge. (If not, I guess I'll have to do it...*sigh*.)
