[unix-pc.general] UNIX-PC Drives

gmark@ihlpf.ATT.COM (Stewart) (12/20/87)

Please excuse what to some might appear a stupid question.
I've seen the postings describing all the hard drives available
for the UNIX-PC. Some appear to have more heads than the UNIX-PC
can access. Some have more cylinders than the 67Mb drive has.
Am I to assume that all the drives listed are compatible regardless?
Are the only criteria left MFM recording method and 1/2 height for
the 7300, wherease 1/2 or full will work for the 3B1? Which of these
listed units can actually "pop" into a 7300 or into a 3B1 without
pulling chips and hacking drivers, etc.? What are the caveats?
I've seen all kinds of differing opinions as to which are most
reliable, etc., as well. Are the extremely high density drives more
prone to failure? Which of these have ACTUALLY BEEN USED?
(Being a pioneer is nice and all, but I have my $$ to consider.)
