I have been going through the info posted by cmv@looney and the article
in Mini-Micro Systems that he referenced and I have a question. In the
article in MMS there are listings for quite a few 3.5 inch disks as
well as the listings for the 5.25 inch disks. I know that the drive in
the machine is 5.25 and all of the drives referenced by cmv@looney are
5.25 inch. Is there any reason why I can't plug in a 3.5 inch drive?
Obviously it will fit in the space (with plenty of room to spare).
Comparing the physical dimensions of the two types, one is usually listed
as "5.75 x 8" and the other is "4 x 5.75". It seems to me like the
3.5 inch drive should just look like a short 5.25 inch drive. The reason
I'm wondering this is that several of the 3.5 inch drives seem to offer
much better price/capacity ratios. For example, there is a drive from
Tandon that has a list price of $440 and a capacity of 73.8 meg. When
you consider that I was seriously looking at an ST251 which is only 51.2
meg for around the same price, it's kind of like getting 20 meg for free.
