[unix-pc.general] PC hangs in vi, other places

scs@lokkur.UUCP (Steve Simmons) (01/25/88)

Lately my 7300 has been hanging unepxectedly. The symptoms at first
looked like bad keyboard, but now I'm not so sure. There is little
or no response to the keyboard, but touching a key sometimes brings
it back from screensave. Interrupts and function keys seem to cause
disk acesses, but usually there is no visual feedback. Sometimes this
condition cures itself, sometimes not. Secondary symptoms -- sometimes
I call it from another machine, and no answer. When I get home to check
it out, sometimes it's hung and sometimes it's fine.

If I leave it alone, sometimes it comes back and sometimes it doesn't.
Doing a hard reset almost always clears things up.

It seems to happen most often when using vi.

Thinking back, this problem hit me once every month or two about a
year ago. Then it was milder, and acted like something was stealing
keystrokes when in vi. Now it's getting up to once a week.

Anybody else seen these problems? Is my motherboard going south? Or
is it some wierd hardware glitch? I'm running a 3.51 release, 20Mb/1Mb,
with a rather smaller than normal swap space.
