[unix-pc.general] Battery backup or UPS for 3B1

paul@cvpath.UUCP (Paul M. Urie MD) (02/04/88)

Has anyone had any experience with a standby battery backup or online
uninterruptible power supply for the UNIX PC. My machine is currently
on a surge suppressor and EMI filter power strip. I have looked
seriously at the new Cleary 1240 online UPS which provides 360 watts
continuous and 2700 watts transient peaks. It provides 12 minutes of
battery supply with AC line failure. The retail cost is $890 but I
have seen it advertised at $688. I run my machine 24 hours per day.
I am wondering if the cost is justified? Please post or email any
responses on the subject.

In some article, someone waxes rhapsodic:
>
>I use the FROB 666 (mfd. by FROB Power Systems, Inc.; 666 W. 66th Street;
>...
>Quick specs of the FROB 666:
>...
>The FROB 666 has my highest recommendation. I operate my systems 66 hrs/day
>and would NEVER consider operating without these UPS systems.
>...

I just _hate_ hype that doesn't include at least a ballpark estimate of
the price. Are these UPSes a particular deal, like $200 for the dink
one and $400 for the big one? There are many companies making/selling
nearly equivalent products. Price is the big issue, especially when you
are protecting a $1200 machine.
