[unix-pc.general] Larry Wall's 'perl' program now available on skeeve

arnold@skeeve.UUCP (Arnold D. Robbins) (02/18/88)

Larry Wall's "perl" program is now available on skeeve for anonymous uucp.
At this point, perl and bison are the only things available; the news
source and GNU awk got deleted by a zealous cron.

Perl is a program that combines features of sed, awk, and sh for data
manipulation and report generation. The version on skeeve is up to
patchlevel 22, the latest version that finally passes all the regression
tests on the Unix/PC. Note that when compiling perl and running Configure
that you *must* 1) use the malloc.c that comes with perl, and 2) load
with the regular, non-shared, version of the C library. Otherwise perl
will fail one of the most important tests.

To pick up the programs:

	phone: +1 404 633 1813
	login: getnews
	password:	getnews

The files live in /usr/spool/uucppublic:

-rw-r--r-- 1 arnold users 91531 Feb 17 17:23 bison.cpio.Z
-rw-r--r-- 1 arnold users 215807 Feb 17 17:23 perl.cpio.Z

These are compress cpio files. Compress comes as a standard part of the
curses/terminfo package with 3.51 and is also available from THE STORE!.

Sites who have an existing uucp link with me can pick up either program
via standard uucp; the getnews login is more restricted and only allows
access to /usr/spool/uucppublic.
