I am working on a consulting project that has a requirement for
reliable file transfer between a Burroughs B20 mini (a box built
by Convergent Technologies) and a VAX running VAX/VMS.
Currently, the B20s involved communicate with a Burroughs 1900
using the standard Burroughs "poll/select" protocol.
My alternatives are as follows:
1) Implement a subset of the "poll/select" protocol on
the VAX. The protocol looks straight-forward enough
from the documentation, but I'm concerned about what
isn't documented.
2) Port KERMIT to the B20. Unfortunately, this is
risky because I don't have any B20 expertise with
which to do the development. (There aren't any
registered versions of KERMIT for the B20.)
3) Determine if BURCOM-11, a comm package from Applied
Information Systems that runs under VMS and permits a
VAX to connect to larger Burroughs systems (as if it
were one or more Burroughs terminals), can be
modified to act as the "master" (i.e., perform the
actual polling, etc.). This approach also has a
large number of unknowns.
If anyone else has experience with this type of situation, has
lived through it and would like to offer advice/words-of-wisdom,
please contact me directly by return mail and/or telephone.
Thanks,
Scott Newman
