[unix-pc.general] Getting worried about disks

kevin@kosman.UUCP (Kevin O'Gorman) (07/18/88)

I have two systems, and an hour ago I thought they both might be dead
instead of just one. I am worried about both.

Number one is as old as unix pc's get (Attilla was ordered about a week
after the product announcement). He was turned off for about 3 months,
and when I tried to get him going again, he wouldn't speak to the hard
disk. The disk made all the right noises, and an alternate disk did, too,
but the select light comes on and that's as far as it gets. The diagnostic
reports that it cannot even recal. Anyone with any hints about how to
approach this. Mention warranty or AT&T service and I will just laugh.
The board has the P5.1 mod, with a socket, and the problem appears whether
or not the PAL is plugged in.

Number two was turned off for five days, while I was away. I just got back
and applied power. Many, many recal noises coming from the disk, and the
screen was about half-way set up. I rebooted to the diagnostic, which
initially reported gobs and gobs of errors from block 9240 to 9261. After
some time, most of these errors "went away" all by themselves, and now the
diagnostic reports no errors that are not in the bad block table already
(there are 7 entries). Anyone know why I should have warmup trouble on
a 3b1 67MB disk? Is this a symptom I should take as dire warning? Does this
just mean I should boot to the diagnostic when the machine is cold and let
it warm up? What's going on?

Anyone with information relating to either system is requested to post or
e-mail as seems right. I will recap e-mail replies if that seems the
right thing to do.
