[unix-pc.general] serial port wiring for unix-pc

jlg@ddsw1.UUCP (JL Gomez) (09/04/88)

I have a question concering the wiring scheme for DTE to DTE connection.
I am using a RJ-11 - DB25 adaptor. The problem is that there are only
4 wires available to connect. I do know I need pins 2 & 3 crossed and
pin 7 is a straight thru. Now, what do I do with the extra wire and
would I have to short any pins on the serial port end of the unix-pc?
Thanks for the info.

Here's what I've been using reliably:

         OTHER DTE UNIX PC

           (1)----------------------------(1)

           (2)----------------------------(3)

           (3)----------------------------(2)

           (7)----------------------------(7)

                                      +---(4)
                                      |
                                      +---(5)

                                      +---(6)
                                      |
                                      +---(8)
                                      |
                                      +---(20)

Some questions...What is the other DTE? Does it have but 4 wires? What
is the "extra" one?

The UNIX PC crosses 2 and 3, and connects 7 straight through as you have
said. It expects 4 and 5 shorted, and 6, 8, and 20 shorted. Note that
no control is passed across the interface with this connection.
