For the past several years, ham radio operators have been using
Belden RG8/X in place of what cs types call "thick" cable. RG8/X
is RG58/U size (ie. thin), but has the electrical characteristics
(50 Ohm, .66 velocity) of thick coax.
I suspect that it would not make it with "stinger" type xceivers,
but would do better than 58U for "T" style. It is much sturdier
than RG58, I have had a couple hundred feet outside of my house
for four years now with no problems at all.
Anyone tried this stuff? It's much cheaper than real "thick"
cable, but should fit the spec just fine.
