For the record: I have been running a Seagate 4096 Full height (read HOT) drive in my "modified" 7300 for going on 6 months now, with only ONE FAN. Yes, 3b1 fans (pun intended), I actually took a fan out of my 7300 when I put in a big drive and changed to a bump top cover...and it runs cooler. I have run many tests on this machine and the hard drive runs cooler with only one fan by the power supply in the system. With two fans in the system, a dead air space forms around the hard disk since the fans are trying to pull air from both sides. Little air flow = HOT SPOT! Now, the something for nothing part: Full height drives want a lot more 12volts than half heights do. The fans run on 12volts. The 7300/3b1 power supply is marginal. Take out one fan and plug the hole, the system runs cooler and has more power available for the hard disk ... sounds like something for nothing to me! Very relavent point number 2: I just got another 7300. It must have been one of the last 512 machines made. It says UNIXPC on the monitor, not 7300 like my other system did, and high serial numbers, etc... Now, here is the interesting point: IT ONLY HAS ONE FAN! The hole on the left is filled with a foam block! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ YES! AT&T SHIPPED 7300s WITH ONLY ONE FAN! (Actually it was CTI) It has been running a week now with 2 slots filled and a Seagate 4051 in it and it is cooler than my other system with the 4096 and 1 combo card. For all you people out there who are not familiar with Seagates, they run hotter than the average disk. In the last 2 weeks, I've seen 3 other new 7300s at DDS with only one fan. Can we get off of this fan business now? If you think there is enough room inside a slant top 7300 to put any board of any size I suggest you get your trusty phillips driver out and pop the lid off. There is NO room in there people *unless* you remove the hard disk. John has busted his behind trying to make our lives better. I have heard one hell of a lot more crying about this upgrade than I can believe. I hope John charges out the wazoo for his kit to make up for the bitching. He asked for suggestions, not complaints. If we lived in a perfect world and every disk manufacturer did everything the same way, we would all have this upgrade by now. But we do not and they do not and it takes time to get the bugs out. AND, IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO RUN CONNECTORS OUT OF THE FAN GRATE ... DON'T. I am sure John is going to loose lots of sleep about where *you* put *your* connectors on *your* computer. Q: how many fans does it take to start a flame? Jan | jan@bagend.UUCP | {backbones}!gatech!bagend!jan ! (404) 434-1335 Kludgey connectors? We don't need no stinking kludgey connectors!
