I have been having a lot of problems with my hard drive on the UNIX-PC. It is a 20M drive, and every now and then lets out horrible grinking noises. Eventually, it would conk out with HDERRs of some sort. I fI opened the PC, I would find nothing wrong with it (but then I am not sure what to look for), and when I put it back together, everything would work perfectly. Recently, I tried to hook up a HP-Thinkjet parallel printer to the PC, but it just didn't seem to work. The printer reacted eveytime the PC came up, or soimething, but nothing got printed out. I opened the box, and dared to venture in deeper than before, and now, the Hard disk does not work at all. It lets out one miserable groan, and then refuses to RECAL at all, though the disk is spinning away to glory be. As such, the machine even refuses to boot off the Hard disk now. Is the disk completely irrecoverable? Or can I do something to the disk, so that I can re-use it! I do not care very much for the data on the disk itself, as that is not an immediate concern of mine at all. I would like very much for the PC to start up. What can I try on the PC, about it's starting up? I think this topic has beaten oft before, so someonoe who can help me, may just wish to send me mail, and spare others the agony of re-reading old hash! If others would like to know, I can send them mail, and if there are sufficient responses, I can even summarise it on the net again. Thanks muchly for taking al the trouble, KANNAN PS: While we are on this topic, wher are the batteries on the PC, that drive it's clock when there is no power etc.? On one of my forays, I seem tohave dislodged it, and don't know where it is, so I can repair it? -=- email: kannan@cis.ohio-state.edu voice: {Res.} (614) 297-8720 | {Off.} (614) 292-8234 snail: Kannan Varadhan 306, W.
