[unix-pc.general] UNIX-PC questions

gmark@ihlpf.ATT.COM (Stewart) (12/10/87)

Okay, here's a list of questions regarding the UNIX-PC to hold you
for a while. I'm hoping some of them are sufficiently naive or
simple to allow a quick response.

1) Does anyone have, or has anyone thought of a way to generate
a window on the UNIX-PC minus those thick borders? NOTE: That is,
NOT a whole screen (as with the Full-Screen UNIX option), but
small windows, using a ctl-D or possibly having the X & ? icons to close it,
but allowing writing into the border or something?

2) Is there a way to provide a "bottom" command, like "layers" on
the DMD5620/30 terminals, or a way to choose which windows are
visible? Scenario: You have a window that only provides a menu or
that is doing a task that you really don't have to look at, and don't
want to take up precious screen space all the time. Shift-susp. could
access it, but otherwise, you want the screen shared only by the windows
you need rapid access to. And may you could point at a window and
push it "out of the way" or to the "bottom" of a stack of windows.

3) Is there a way to make the entire screen or window scrollable and/or
saveable without having to be explicitly in an editor or tool to do such?
Like, having windows automatically invoke a tool that emulates a larger
window than shown?

4) I've seen that tool RN discussed many times on the net, so
it must be really interesting. But what the heck is it?

5) What's the difference between the "UNIX Development Tools (1031-018)"
and "UNIX Utilities (1031-020)" and "UNIX PC UTIL (1031-021)"?

6) What do different versions of C-compilers available for the UNIX-PC,
like "LPI", have that the compiler in the utilities doesn't?

7) Anyone use the "UNIX-PC Network Program (1031-S01)"? Comments?

8) What are the characteristics, pluses and minuses of
	a) 2.0MB RAM Expansion board (37416)
	b) 512K RAM with 2 EIA ports (37406) (are these extra RS-232s?)
	c) UNIX Expansion UT (??) (37420)
	d) UNIX PC Expansion Card (8302-102)
And which of these are mutually exclusive?

9) Anyone given any thought to a cheap backup system using the serial port?
I assume the streamer backup has a direct bus to the card slot, but if
a slower medium were left connected overnight, say for 15 hours at 9600 baud...?
Oh, well.

I'll appreciate any and all answers and comments, regardless of
how subjective. BTW, due to network difficulties, please include
a phone#, if a return contact is required. Thanks in advance!

Since my previous query re: smgr has brought me several responses
to the question of how to get rid of the "Hard Disk Full" pop-up
(thanks, all!), but none at all to my other question, here it is
again:

Is it possible to get rid of smgr, but to have another program
simply update a clock display on the top line of the screen (the one
usually used by the smgr clock display)?

And here are a few other questions, some of which have probably been
answered before, but I can't find the answers now that I need them:

1. What is the maximum hard disk size the standard 3b1 controller will
   handle?

If the answer is, "67MB", is there a way around this limit -- I
have seen references to a WD2010 chip -- what does it do, and where
   can one get it?

2. What is a cheap source for 3b1 serial boards?

3. How can one get the 3b1 (3.5) lp spooler to behave as described in
the manual, i.e. to print the "Request id is ..." message, UNLESS
invoked with the -s[ilent] option? My lp command is ALWAYS silent,
and it is a nuisance to have to lpstat before cancelling a request.
Also, within the interface script, $2 is supposed to be the name
of the user who invoked lp. On 3b1-3.5, it is always lp. Are these
known bugs, are they fixed in 3.51, and/or is there a 3.5 way
   around them?

4. Finally, I am still in the marked for complete docs to the 3.5 Develop-
ment Set. I am willing to pay for these. I might also still need
3.5 Basic Set docs -- someone e-mailed me offering to send me
these, but I have heard nothing since. Please let me know if you have
either of these and are willing to sell them.

Thanks!
