[unix-pc.general] Source for WD2010 ?

markw@gvlv2.GVL.Unisys.COM (Mark H. Weber) (06/23/89)

Where can I get one of these little devils? Thad's source, Ace Electronics in
Santa Clara, is out, and is unsure when they will get more, as they got them
surplus to begin with. Please send email if possible, and I will summarize.

Re: source of WD2010 chips ...

I've called over 20 electronics firms in the Silicon Valley area, and only
ACE had any AT SURPLUS PRICES.

Since I need some more, and since others in the local users' group need some,
too, I called Western Digital in Irvine, CA and they put me in contact with
their local sales rep and the local distributor (Anthem Electronics, San Jose).

In quantities under 100, the price is $43.something; real price breaks occur
only for QTY between 100 and 499, 500-999, and up.

I simply haven't the resources to buy, say, 100, and dole them out in onesies
and twosies.

We're looking to buy approx. 10, so that satisfies any minimum order
requirements of Anthem, and the plan is to get them within the next 2 weeks
or so.

I'm not adverse to buying more WITH CA$H IN HAND; I'm not equipped to extend
credit. Having not solicited a "group buy" like this before, I'm open to all
suggestions and ideas how to handle it, assuming there's sufficient interest.

Recapping the discussion about the WD2010 chip (to replace the stock WD1010
in the UNIXPC): this chip is needed ONLY if you intend using a hard disk
having more than 1024 cylinders (such as a Miniscribe 3085, Maxtor XT2190,
etc.); the chip is NOT needed for, say, a Seagate ST251, Miniscribe 6085,
etc.

If there is interest, I'd be happy to copy onto already formatted floppy
the new diagnostic disk software. But we have to resolve the issue of how
to handle the $$$ first. Perhaps public discussion in this forum would be
the best first step to expedite the exchange of ideas.
