[unix-pc.general] HELP! power hit cause clicking power-up loop

dpb@tellab5.tellabs.CHI.IL.US (Darryl Baker) (08/13/89)

Well you hardware gurus out there I came home last night to a machine
last night that it was clicking and the keyboard lights flash. It
doesn't access the floppy or give valid failure LEDs. I've disconnected
the disk drive and the clicking seems to come from the shielded section
under the power supply.

Anybody got any ideas?

Well I got some mail on this from Stuart Rowland at AT&T Bell Labs and
he said, " I had the same problem with my UNIXpc. The repair guys told
me that when power was restored, the fan did not start. After a few
hours without cooling, the power supply blew itself out. You need to
replace the power supply. The contents of your disk should be OK.
Sorry for the bad news." Bad news hell no. That was great news and
correct though I thought at first the disk had been blown too. It was a
grounding problem in my test setup. I don't think the fan didn't restart
but it was just a power supply.
