[unix-pc.general] Now that I have my UnixPC... help...

elliston@msdrl.UUCP (Keith Elliston) (10/04/89)

Well... I finally have my Unix-PC up and running. I have an old 7300, on
which I have put a Seagate 4096. I formatted it using the protocol for
the miniscribe (8 heads, 1024 cyls). All went well. I have installed
the foundation set (3.51) and the development set. So... now I need some
assistance.

First... How do I attach my Microcom 9624c to the RS232 port? How do I
configure it? Can I use it both as a dial out and answer???

2nd: Where can I get a connector (adaptor) for the internal modem jack.
It surely is not a standard RJ11.

3rd: Who wants to set me up for news and mail? What is the best News soft-
ware? Who can I call up for NEWS and Mail (any volunteers)....

4th: I sure could use some more memory (I only have 512k).. anyone got
an extra memory expansion board??? Maybe even a combo board???

5th: I would like to be able to access that 9th head on my disk... I guess
that i need the WD2010. Where can I find one.

6th: I want to run this machine as a sort of "this is a good reason to
learn Unix for someone from VMS", and as a mail/news/bbs system. Anyone
have hints for me... like are there any good cheap (PD) BBS systems for
this beast? I appreciate any and all answers.

Well... I am sure that these questions have been asked and answered before...
I hope you all dont take offense at me for doing just one more time.

Thanks...

Keith

From long and painful experience with a 9624c on a Sun, I would
configure it as a boat anchor. It probably won't do that job any
better than it works as a modem, though. I ended up dumping the
thing and replacing it with a DEC DF03 (1200 baud). Since you've
got a 1200 baud modem in your UNIX PC, and it works reasonably
well, I'd suggest using it instead of the Microcom. Or getting
a different external modem that won't give you eternal grief.

It is standard RJ11. Just get a modular cable and plug one end
into the modem, the other into the wall jack.

You're welcome to call either ditka (San Jose) or royko (Chicago).
Both are PC Pursuitable, if that matters, and ditka has a Telebit
TrailBlazer.

Can't help there.

The WD2010 will let you access more than 1024 cylinders, not much
of a help on your drive. To access more than 8 heads you need the
P5.1 upgrade, or better yet, one of the dual drive upgrades offered
by Lenny Tropiano (icus!lenny) or John Milton (uncle!jbm), which
give you the benefits of the P5.1 upgrade and more.

On my 7300, purchased from DDS (good people!) in Marietta, Georgia, I DO
NOT have "standard RJ11" ports. They are RJ45 (8 pins, normally used
for multiline phone installations). *I* did not modify the ports, and I
doubt that DDS did (this was a fire sale purchase).

You CAN plug RJ11 connectors into the phone ports on my machine and
have the hardware, OS, etc all work fine. Just plug and go!

I haven't checked if any of the "unused" pins are brought in to the
system board. Does anyone else have RJ45's? Is this another
undocumented aspect of the 7300/3B1? Do I have 2X2 (=4) phone line
capability---as implied by the RJ45's (half :-)).
