[unix-pc.general] smgr dies with recal-ing

crimmins@csli.Stanford.EDU (Mark Crimmins) (02/26/90)

I have a 3b1 with two drives (icus) which has a recurring problem that
happens more or less at random, usually when I'm using the machine
heavily, but sometimes when I'm not there, and there is or should be
no heavy disk access or other activity going on. I never had this
problem before performing the icus upgrade, and it never has happened
with my external drive. I took out the left fan at the time, in case
that's relevant, and the reformat + surface test I did of my internal
drive yielded no bad blocks.

This is the scenario: the internal HD (Miniscripe 67M) recals a few
times, then smgr dies, then (usually) I get a HDERR in the unix.log,
always a different block (Check/ID error (51,10)). This has happened
about ten times in three weeks.

This problem persisted through my adopting the 3.51 fixdisk2 to my 3.5
OS. At first, I suspected it had something to do with the sysinfo
program, since when smgr died, and I was using ua, there would be
something about /usr/local/bin/sysinfo mixed into the Office menu (?).
But I stopped using sysinfo and the problem continues.

Does this sound familiar or explicable to anyone?

Please mail me any advice you can think of, and I'll post a summary to
this group.

Thanks very much for any help,

Mark
