Recently, many people have been asking whether there is a standard image file format for X and image processing/manipulation routines to go with it. At MIT, we are nearing a final specification for our image file format. It will probably be called XIFF. It was written by folks at DEC's Western Research Lab, with help from DEC staff at Project Athena. Application-oriented people like me gave advice along the way. There are at least three groups producing image processing/manipulation packages that are very interested in having them run under/with X. They are headed by: Alan Paeth, University of Waterloo John Rasure, University of New Mexico. Georges Grinstein, University of Lowell Tony Della Fera and I will be attempting to promote communication and cooperation in this area. If we can further the distribution of a public library of useful and compatible programs, created without unnecessary duplication of effort, giving everyone due credit for their work, we will have succeeded very well indeed. Please let me know if you are working or about to start working on these issues. Steve Wertheim Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences MIT
