it's happened about five times this year; the server just goes away. i've got a sun-2 running os 3.2 and am running the 12/24 V10R4 server. unfortunately there are hardly any symptoms. there is nothing in /usr/adm/messages that may indicate processes dying due to swapping problems or the like. the problem which i am about to describe usually happens when i move the mouse (perhaps after closing an xterm window). the console window begins to disappear, but does not completely go away. instead, the "console" (not to be confused with console window) prompt appears in the middle of the screen. in addition, the keymap is all messed up. has anyone observed this behavior? any fixes? any way to reset the keyboard keymap short of rebooting (which i have to do now)? i'm hoping that V11 will be robust enough to catch anything that might make the server go away, and reset the tty and keyboard to some sane settings before aborting. i also suggest that the server clear the screen upon exiting, rather than plopping the console prompt in the middle of the graphics. --bw
