[comp.windows.x] Summer Job on Tiled Windows

ellis@siemens.UUCP (04/01/87)

                             SUMMER JOBS IN THE
                      SIEMENS RTL TILED WINDOW PROJECT

At Siemens RTL, we are building a tiled window manager for X which will be
distributed as part of the X release tape. Unlike other tiled window
managers which lay out windows in columns, the Siemens RTL window manager
supports arbitrary screen layout. A variety of automatic features place and
move windows to enforce window constraints while minimizing disturbance to
the current screen layout.

A number of summer jobs are available for GRADUATE students. You should have
experience either in building window systems or in algorithm design
(especially in floor planning or VLSI layout). Fluency in C is required.

During the summer, we will be working on
   - Improved automatic placement and layout adjustment.
   - Improved prorating algorithms (allocating screen space to windows,
given the topology of the layout).
   - Support for multiple desktops.
   - Support for aspect, area, alignment and adjacency constraints.
   - Design and implementation of a language for expressing prioritized
     window constraints.

Siemens Research and Technology Laboratories, in Princeton NJ, is the
American laboratory for Siemens, the largest electronics company in Europe.
The lab is located right on the Route 1 corridor, an hour from downtown
Philadelphia and an hour and 15 minutes from lower Manhattan.
