This was one of the ideas that came out during the flaming a couple of months ago about who pays for all the trash. I think if a system wants to forward news that they have the right to know who is sending the garbage messages. Here at pur-ee, anonymous notes are not allowed to be distributed over the network. It really helps keep people accountable. Malcolm Slaney Notes Administrator

There are a few legitimate cases where a message should be anonymous. For example, the newsgroup net.rumor is probably one for which an anonymous article should be allowed. If a newsgroup ever started up for personal advice (Dear Abby or whatever - I understand such groups exist on Notes at Illinois) it would be important. Perhaps anonymous articles should be accepted only in certain newsgroups? (With validation techniques, it should be possible to decide reliably whether the claimed author for the article is legit.) The ability to remain anonymous is one of democracy's strengths. I always sign my net submissions, but I would resent being forced to do so. Beatriz Infante, HP Design Aids Lab ..!ucbvax!hpda!bvi
