[comp.windows.x] TeX fonts for X?

soiffer@tekchips.TEK.COM (Neil Soiffer) (04/15/87)

Does anybody have TeX fonts for X that are designed for screens (ie,
designed for resolutions of 90-100 pixels/inch)? I am looking for
at least the following parts of a font family: roman, math italics,
symbol, and extension fonts with pixel height in the 10-14 pixel range.
The 10.4 distribution comes with some TeX fonts, but these are (apparently)
designed for higher resolution devices, and are 18 and 25 pixels high -- too
large to use as a "normal" font on my screen. They are also incomplete.

Any help would not only save me time, but save the sensiblities of those
that would have to look at my font "design".

I presume you refer to the fonts used by xdvi.

The VorTeX tool distribution from Berkeley has a set of tuned 118 dpi
fonts. If you invoke xdvi with -s 1 -p 118 you can use these fonts. Or
recompile xdvi. Address is dist-vortex@berkeley.edu.

The TeX tape also has 118 dpi fonts, intended for Versatec, not as
pretty as the VorTeX set, but what the heck.

If you have Metafont you can create your own 118 dpi set using the
device parameters for Sun supplied in UIUC.mf.

By the way, the TeX world has moved to pk font files (which are more
compact). Haavard Eidnes (excuse my spelling if wrong) did most of the
work adding pk font capability (upward compatible) to xdvi. I just took
out a bug or two. But I don't know how to submit this for the next
distribution. Can somebody please tell me who is collecting tools for V11?
