[comp.windows.x] X "savvy" /etc/comsat?

avolio@decuac.UUCP (04/17/87)

Does anyone have a version of comsat that will use a small window for
notification? I have xbif that uses the mailbox icon. What I am
looking for is a more informative comsat/biff combo that would print
... well, comsat stuff in another window. I don't find one in the
X10R[34] distributions.

If there is no such thing, are there reasons why there shouldn't be?
(Before I go and write it.) (Oh, and I know you can fake it by
opening up a small xterm window, doing a biff y, and leaving it
there... not quite what I'd like.)

The newest version of xbiff does what you want, ie when you
receive new mail it flashes, you hit it with the left
button and it gives you comsat style output and then
you can hit it with the middle button and get a summary
(ala from) and then hit it with the right button and have it
start up your mailtool.

ps. It is available on prang.Berkeley.EDU or by public
ftp to ingres.Berkeley.EDU (pub/X/xbiff.shar).

I did one years ago, people around here use it all the time. I'll send
you the code I have lying around, and will let others ask YOU for it if
they care. Your mileage may vary considerably. Comsat seems to be one
of the those things hacked on every system, and which doesn't seem to
work when moved to another system. You may just have to extract the
relevant pieces of code and reinsert them in your source.
