I realize this newsgroup is dedicated to X Windows, but since there are no other windows/user interface newsgroup I thought I'd try it. I'm trying to find out how I can get the copies of the original paper(s) about the Xerox Star workstation's user interface. In particular, I am interested in the UI human factors research and results, and the UI design. Please E-mail any responses. Thanks in advance. -- Steve Boyle {decvax,linus,wjh12,mit-eddie,cbosgd,masscomp}!genrad!panda!svb svb@suntan

Steve, To my knowledge, the definitive book on Xerox Star technology, especially the user interface ideas, is the following: "Office Systems Technology, A Look into the World of the Xerox 8000 Series Products: Workstations, Services, Ethernet, and Software Development" published by the Xerox Office Systems Division November, 1982 document number OSD-R8203 I believe the current address of the Office Systems Division is 2100 Geng Road Palo Alto, Ca. 94303 but if you don't have any luck there, you can always reach then through PARC: Xerox Palo Alto Research Center 3333 Coyote Hill Road Palo Alto, Ca. 94304 If all else fails, I have a copy of the book. Actually the relevant UI papers are: Smith, D.C., et. al., "Designing the Star User Interface," Byte, 7(4), April, 1982, pp.242-282. Smith, D.C., et. al., "The Star User Interface: An Overview," Proc. National Computer Conference, June, 1982, pp.515-528. Lipke, D.E., et. al., "Star Graphics: An Object-Oriented Implementation," Computer Graphics, 16(3), July, 1982, pp.115-124.
