I agree that such a facility is sometimes very useful. I suggest using
the mail aliasing facility (/usr/lib/aliases) (let me know if anyone out
there is using a mailer without systemwide mail aliases) to alias the
user 'general' on each system to the newsgroup 'general' on that system.
We already alias most newsgroups this way so that posting can be done by
mailing.
P.S. perhaps this discussion should move to net.news?
P.P.S. when we "decide" this question, how do we tell all the users
what we have decided? This resembles the problem we already have with
[BIC ON] users not knowing which newsgroups contain what topics ([FLAME
ON] doesn't anybody read the manual?? That's why it's online! [FLAME
OFF]) and posting bizarre stuff to net.general. [BIC OFF]
