[comp.windows.x] graphics and windowing standards

I am looking for information about existing or planned implementations of
graphics standards environments (GKS, PHIGS, etc) in windowing environments
(X, MS Windows, NeWS, etc).  What's out there?  What are the problems?
Which is most popular?
