Well, after months of agony and pain, it appears that prang (either old or new) is not going to come up Real Soon. DEC wants us to buy them (they're both seed units) and I don't think that's in the cards.. So, enter the new virtual prang! hoser.berkeley.edu, my IBM PC/RT running Brown's AC/IX (with NFS) is going to step in.. This should not be construed as favoritism between DEC and IBM :-), but at least the RT works reliably. More so, in fact, than prang ever did.. The following mechanisms have been set up: Anonymous ftp - The usual setup.. Puts you into /usr/src/X.. Logins: x - no password - puts you into /usr/src/X.. X - password x - Not really necessary, since we have anonymous ftp now (its original purpose was to satisfy ftp, which didn't like to xfer to/from passwordless accounts), but it's there for compatability. /usr/src/X is exported to the world. If you want to NFS mount it from Japan, give it a shot, but this is probably only useful if you are fairly close (network-wise) to UCB.. The prang source tree has been xfered in all its braindeadness.. The X11 stuff is not there (docs, etc), but I trust that someone will put them on in time.. I'm sure we have a *lot* of software that's been trying to get onto prang for awhile now.. Again, I am sorry for the long delay, but I hope we can live more happily on hoser than we did on prang.. Vital stats: Machine name: hoser.berkeley.edu IP address: 128.32.152.19 CPU type: IBM proprietary RISC design. Speed: about 4 RISC MIPS. Memory: 4MB Ethernet: Ungermann Bass board. Disks: 3 71MB Fujitsu HD70R's, one AT compatable floppy drive (yetch). Tape: We don't wanna talk about IBM's streaming tape.. Charm: about 1/e. Strangeness: About 20.
