[comp.windows.x] an X tutorial for mere mortals

antwerp@thoth23.BERKELEY.EDU (Kim Manton) (06/16/87)

i am bolting together an x manual. the manual is in two parts: 1, for
mere mortals who know nothing about windowing systems, least of all
anything about X; and 2, all the technical hooplah for programmer-types
who want to write X applications. included will be a quick-reference
guide to X, and a tutorial for rank beginners. it will describe a generic
version of X, tho the idiosyncracies of X on some specific systems are being
discussed.

it's temporarily on hold while i finish an article for macworld which is
requiring most of my spare time/stress-coping skills. in the meantime, if
y'all would send me any of your comments, i'd be much obliged. i should be
getting back to work on it in about two weeks. i'm hoping to finish both
sections in about two months (around the end of august). i'm still
debating whether it will be public domain or not, since my publisher may
be interested in it (probably will be, so rms and followers keep your
shirts on). at least a quick tutorial version for beginners will be
posted to this newsgroup for free use & distribution by the end of august,
since i will be using that in the sun clusters where i work. i'll keep
this newsgroup posted regarding the manual's progress & availability.

chocolate chip cookies also readily accepted. (i might be persuaded to,
uh, write a little faster, nudge nudge, if i were to find some chocolate
chip cookies in my snailmailbox. *cough*.) (you think i'm joking...heh heh...
don't underestimate the power of bribery, my dumplings.)

yes, virginia, documentation writers *do* exist! (against their
better judgement and probably their will.)
