[comp.windows.x] X Programming for Beginners

ackerman@athena.mit.edu (Mark S. Ackerman) (06/18/87)

About three weeks from now, I will be finishing a cookbook of *simple*
examples for Xv11. These will be the annotated lab exercises from a
course that I'm teaching at Project Athena for beginning application
developers. The course is designed to get someone started with X and
the Xtoolkit. The basic idea is to get people to the point where they
can do a relatively normal application; they will then be able to use
the manual to do more complex programs. As such, the course and the
cookbook are slanted towards putting windows up, using graphics
contexts, drawing text, and the such.

I'm not sure yet how the cookbook will be distributed. It will be
most likely available through anonymous ftp, and unfortunately, it
will be too long to post to the net. I'd like it to be a Working
Paper from Project Athena; we're trying to set up such a series.

In any case, I will post again to the net when it is ready. If you
have any comments, I would like to hear them. But, please, *please*
do not mail requests for the paper to me as that will just slow things
down.
