Hello X-people, I am trying to convince some administrative-types (and myself) that XWindows (along with NFS, probably) would be capable of supporting a large diverse set of workstations, compute servers, and disk servers as a standard communications and user interface medium for distributing computing resources. Can we place our clients on selected machines to balance or distribute the computing load and maintain a uniform user interface across workstations in an elegant manner? Would it be good for semi-computer-literate types? (e.g. whats all this stuff about meta-mouse buttons? Sounds questionable). Would XWindows not (yet) work well for this application or am I being dense and I should RTFM some more? Since we don't have any machines to run XWindows on yet, I can't test it. Any better ideas that I'm too dense to see? Any of your thoughts would be appreciated. I would also like to build a list of current/planned XWindows applications. I would appreciate anyone sending information (if it doesn't violate your marketing agreements) on any major/important software packages that run as XWindows clients. The information desired is: Package name: Function: (a 1-2 sentence blurb) Origin: (who wrote it or ported it) Machine: (machines, op systems, and languages written for) Status: (public domain, copyrighted but distributable, licenced but cheap for universities <$300, licenced proprietary >$300 but worth the $$, etc.) I will summarize all interesting stuff back to the net. If all this has been done before, please point me in the right direction to find this info.
