A small mixed bag of X queries, replies direct if not relevant to all please.
(1) X on suns: you can use the fixed width fonts from the sun standard
release. However if you have an xterm from another host eg a Vaxstation
to that sun, you have to have a .Xdefaults entry ON THE VAXSTATION
to set the font you see sitting at your sun, referring to the sun's
path to the font library.
Ok: there are good reasons why xterm & X-utilities look on the invoking
host for config details, but for setting features on the REMOTE display
device something else is needed.
I tried setting this using the -fb -f args to xterm setting them to
point to the correct place on the sun but it didn't work, It appeared
to fail to parse the second argument in the command line.
(2) I am told that rlogin overheads are high, and that remote login over
ethernet into a Vax from a sun will cripple it much more than
multiplexed i/o into it from a terminal port switch or other terminal
login load.
how does the X protocol compare for overheads & load when using xterm?
-I put this wee line into my .uwmrc:
vs2: !"xhost vs2; rsh vs2 "nohup xterm $localhost:0 &"
(actually the rsh is in a shellscript in my search path) and it appears
to work, but I cant asses the relative loads on local & remote host
accurately.
(3) Has anyone built X on a pyramid yet? I built libX and then xterm but
get random-ish lines on my screen & this error message when I
xterm into a sun 3/50:
./xterm white:0
X Error: parameter not a Window
Request code: 3
Request function: 126
Request window 0x0
Error Serial #64
Current serial #64
all suggestions greatfully received.
Apologies if this is non-relevant or covered in the manual, I dont have
all the edocumentation to hand and built the pyramid version "on the side".
