[comp.windows.x] Use V10 or V11?

garrity@garrity.applicon.UUCP (07/09/87)

I have been asked to look into porting our internal graphics package to
X. I am trying to decide whether it would be better to port to V10 which
I have now, or wait and port to V11 when it is available. As a result, I
was wondering if someone could tell me when V11 will be available, and how
different it will be from V10. The areas in which I am interested are 2D
curves and text, and input. The V11 spec which I have seems quite different
from the V10, and I am afraid that any effort spent in porting to it might
be wasted when V11 became available. The work would probably be done on
Suns. I am currently running V10R3.

Any thoughts or comments?

V11 will be available in September. The MIT release will include a Sun
server port (whether Sun also sells a product is something you will have
to ask Sun). V11 *is* significantly different than V10, both for
application programming and for server porting. My suggestion is that
you get your feet wet with V10, but you should definitely be designing
with V11 in mind.
