[comp.windows.x] X Windows on lisp machines

andersa@kuling.UUCP (Anders Andersson) (07/25/87)

At our site, we currently don't have any UNIX-based workstations, but
rather a few plain multiuser BSD UNIX machines (VAX, uVAX & Sun), and
some Lisp machines (most notably Xerox 1186 and LMI Lambda), all on a
net. I guess it would be reasonable to run X Window applications on any
of the UNIX machines, using the Lisp machines as servers (If it's not,
please tell me why).

Are there any server implementations for the machines mentioned above?
RWS@zermatt told me about one for the Symbolics and yes, Robert, if that
one may be useful to me (see below) I would like to have it, thanks!
*But* I guess I'll need the UNIX X Window distribution anyway - or maybe
only the client "library" or whatever it is will be sufficient in my case?
However, I would like to know where I can get it, and to what cost.
Is there any distributor in Europe, for the sake of simplicity?

It's not urgent, so I can probably wait for X11. How much different is it?
Can an X11 client talk to an X10 server (like the Symbolics one), or do
they need to be upgraded simultaneously?

Ah yes, the Lambda does of course share its cabinet and bus with an MC68k
UNIX System V, but would it be to any real advantage to use that thing
for the X applications? Does X and SysV go together? I don't believe we
have much disk for it anyway...
