[net.news] Down with net.general

bstempleton (11/26/82)

I used to read all my news at 4800 baud. Now my leased line is gone and
I read a lot of my stuff at only 300 baud. It has now come much more to
my attention that there is ten times the traffic on the net their should
be. I have unsubscribed to most groups, but here's my latest suggestion:

Let's get rid of the newsgroup net.general!

More distinctly, let's get rid of the name net.general. It's wrong and
encourages wrong use. The name should be changed to something scary like:
  a) net.everybody
(This is the most reasonable name, but not scary enough, so try)
  b) net.allusers
  c) net.10000users
  d) net.all400sites

Of course, if anybody finds the time to implement keyword news as I suggested
about half a year ago, then we'd have no net.general anyway

We need net.general. We need a place to post things that don't
belong anywhere else (e.g. BEGINNINGS of discussions that don't
have their own groups and should THEN GO TO NET.MISC), for short
general announcements, blurbs, etc. I think net.general is the
perfect name for it. After all, nothing in it is very specific
(or at least, no specific discussions should EVER be in it!) and
there is no one subject matter for it.
