[comp.windows.x] X, Sys V, DOS, and other absurd combinations

edc@altnet.UUCP (Eric Christensen) (09/26/87)

O.K.... I admit to being a X windows novice. Heck, I haven't even finished
wading through all the documentation in the MIT V11R1 source release yet. But
I just can't help asking a few really stupid questions (mainly so I won't
waste a bunch of time trying to do the undoable).

What I am considering is to implement X Windows under UNIX System V.3 using
an AT clone with a CGA (ok, maybe EGA) and microsoft mouse as a workstation.

My questions are this...

    1) Has X been ported to V.2 or V.3 before? All references I see are to
BSD based systems. If it has been done, are there any really big
problems (aside from the usual cultural differences between BSD and
         USG implementations).

    2) How about using the AT as the workstation. By the way, I'm forced
to run DOS on the AT (curses!) due to the networking software I
have available to me. I know the CGA is a bit limited, so maybe an
EGA is a better answer. Comments, suggestions, or hysterical laughter
		 would be appreciated.

    3) I've noticed several comments about byte ordering not being handled
by the server. Is this a problem if my network takes care of it for
me? In particular I'm referring to using a 68020 host to serve the
ATs. Would I be better off to use a 80386 host so I don't have to
		 worry about it?

    4) Are my younger days of substance abuse finally catching up with me?
Is senility setting in early? Am I just plain brain damged/dead?
In other words; Is this a reasonable project for a small group of
serious hackers to attempt? We are a well rounded group, with
applications, comunications and kernel types. Unfortunately, we are
lacking any commitment from our respective employers. This means
that this is a night and weekend project.

As I said before any comments, suggestions, or hysterical laughter would be
very much appreciated. If there are others out there interested in this type
of implementation, I would like to here your ideas.
