The area of Data Base Management Systems has evolved from a small discipline to a source of many interesting problems both from the theoretical and the practical point of view. Initially DBMS were thought primarily useful for business data processing. Recently, efforts are made for using data base management systems to support engineering environments (CAD/VLSI), artificial intelligence applications (knowledge base management , production systems) and a number of other applications using non-conventional types of data (geogra- phic, text, etc). Also, there are numerous conferences and workshops held on DBMS every year, with large participation and a lot of success. Currently issues on DBMS are discussed in various news groups (e.g. net.ai , net.lang.prolog) not allowing pe- ople interested in the area to have a central source of information or subjects for discussion. Questions on com- mercial DBMS appear even in net.wanted and net.general. I would like to request the creation of a new news group (net.db) that will solve the above problem. If you agree, please send me mail to the address shown below and I will try to forward this request to the proper person. -- --------------------------------------------------- Timos Sellis UUCP : {seismo,decvax,ihnp4}!ucbvax!ucbingres!timos CSNET : timos@ucbingres.berkeley ARPA : timos@ucbingres US Mail: Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Computer Science Division, 573 Evans Hall, University of California , Berkeley , CA 94720 Off. ph: (415) 642-8072
