Greetings,
I am working part-time on a new window manager for X11 dubbed
twm (Tom's Window Manager). At least three people here are now
using it and finding it useful. Let me describe it then ask
my questions.
It puts title bars on all windows and provides iconify, focus, and resize
buttons in the title bar. Sound familiar to wm?
Left mouse button in the titlebar raises the window.
Middle mouse button in the titlebar moves the window.
Right mouse button in the title bar lowers the window.
Pull down and pull right (ala SunView) menus are provided. I provide
pull down menus from the root window only and I do not look at the keyboard
when pulling down menus. If you have a 3 button mouse, you get three
"root" menus.
Menu entries can contain one of the following:
!"some string" passes "some string" to /bin/sh for execution
^"another string" places "another string" in the cut buffer
f.file "filename" read the file "filename" into the cut buffer
f.refresh refresh the display
f.focus focus input on the root window
f.twmrc source the .twmrc file
What I would like to know is what features of uwm do people really
use? Does anyone really use things like f.pushright or f.pushleft?
What features would people like to see in a new window manager?
Twm is only a few weeks old, is my first X (any version) program, and is
certainly not ready for distribution. Maybe someday.
