This was sent once before to XPERT, but it didn't seem to make it all the way
through the gateway onto comp.windows.x, so I'm retransmitting it from the
other direction. The stuff on setting up redistribution points is important.

As a result of the recent X Conference, there are a number of X related mailing
lists sprouting up. To provide coherence of addresses (both for sending mail
to the lists and for getting yourself on a list, generating lists of lists,
etc.), we're volunteering to maintain the various lists on EXPO, the MIT X
Consortium's server machine. The "ximage" and "xfont" lists have already taken
us up on this offer, and I've sent mail to several other list maintainers.
If you are forming an X mailing list, please consider allowing us to keep the
master copy on EXPO. Just send mail to "lists-request@expo.lcs.mit.edu" with
the desired name, and the electronic address in domain form for any initial
members.
As this is likely to place a fairly substantial mail load, I'll make a plea
for a few simple guidelines for people to follow when subscribing to a list:
1. Ask around your organization to see if there is already a local
redistribution. If there is, all you have to do is get on the
list locally.
2. If there isn't a local redistribution for the list, set one up and
send mail to the appropriate topic-request list with the internet
domain style address for your redistribution.
The goal: to send just one copy of each piece of mail to a given
company or university.
3. Mail sent to a topic-request address should have the first word of
the subject line be TOPIC, in caps, so that it can be distinguished.
For example, mail sent to ximage-request should have XIMAGE be the
first word, and mail sent to list-request should have LIST be the
first word. Make sure that the return address to be used is
EXPLICITLY given in the body of the message.
For example,
% mail xfont-request@expo.lcs.mit.edu
Subject: XFONT addition request
Please add the following address to the xfont mailing list
for the International Widget Company:
xfont-local%mumble.widget.com@relay.cs.net
^D
Case does not matter in mailing list names, although I'll be storing them
in lowercase to make sorting and generating catalogues easier.
UUCP sites that don't have registered domains should give a path relative to
some Internet host (I will default to eddie.mit.edu since it can handle
host!user@eddie.mit.edu or user%host.uucp@eddie.mit.edu).
