[comp.windows.x] expo ftp bug & detecting corruption

don@BRILLIG.UMD.EDU (Don Hopkins) (03/07/88)

I got a copy of the X11R2 distribution from John Greenblatt, who had
ftp'd it from expo to an RT at umd. Unfortunitly, contrib.src.tar.Z
was corrupted. (It unpacked, but there were glitches in the text
files.) I've been trying to get a fresh copy from expo to a Sun
(running 3.0) at umd, but I have experienced many many lost ftp
connections in a row. The files that did get through seemed to be the
right size, though. On my last attempt, contrib.src.tar.Z.split.ah
only got 20480/512000 of the way over. (Yes, I used binary. No, I'm
not even going to try compiling under 3.0, if I can ever get the whole
thing over.)

Could somebody please put a text file in the ftp directory listing the
checksums of all the split files? I would appreciate this very much, as it
would save a LOT of time to be able to verify each file as it beamed
over, and to know exactly which ones are corrupt.

If there is already a file there containing the split file checksums,
and I missed it, then would you at least put a symbolic link to it in
the pub directory called
GET_THIS_FILE_OF_CHECKSUMS_FIRST_BEFORE_ATTEMPTING_TO_TRANSFER_THE_SPLIT_FILES,
for poor sods like me who use flakey networks and microscopic fonts?

Here are the checksums of what I was able to get over:

% sum contrib.*
12485 500 contrib.src.tar.Z.split.aa
24814 500 contrib.src.tar.Z.split.ab
59594 500 contrib.src.tar.Z.split.ac
32101 500 contrib.src.tar.Z.split.ad
52275 500 contrib.src.tar.Z.split.ae
07590 500 contrib.src.tar.Z.split.af
36030 500 contrib.src.tar.Z.split.ag
47063 20 contrib.src.tar.Z.split.ah

I *think* we are using pretty vanilla SunOS 3.4 kernel and ftp software
on expo. Sorry if there are problems getting stuff off of it. There
is now a SUMS file in each of the four tar directories.
