I'm having a problem with the X11 definition of XClearArea and XClear. The manual (and the "ultimate documentation", the code) specify that these calls only work if a background tile is specified. If you created the window with a background color, as specified in XCreateWindow, XClear and XClearArea will not work. Does anyone else think that XClear should work even though no background tile is specified? It would not be too hard to change and I think it would eliminate some "user misunderstandings".
