[comp.windows.x] X.V11R2 + updates = now available in full

lmjm@doc.ic.ac.uk (Lee McLoughlin) (03/08/88)

Below is the README from expo.
You also need the stuff from the updates directory not on most tapes.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Those of you who are after X.V11R2 in the uk can now get it via guest niftp
from Imperial College.
	Host: uk.ac.ic.doc.gould
	Name: guest
	Pass: your mail addr
Type: binary (apart from README and ls-l = text)

It is in tar+compress+split format and the filenames are all prefixed
by <XV11R2> (and remember the files are binary). Eg:
	fcp -b -Uguest -Plmjm@doc.ic.ac.uk "<XV11R2>ls-l@uk.ac.ic.doc.gould" ls-l
Will get you the directory listing shown below.

IT IS BIG!! I MEAN REALLY BIG!!! So plese do not try and grab the files
during working hours.

To recreate you'll have to do somthing like:
	cat X* | uncompress | tar xvf -

Please try and get it this way if you want it. If you really must
have it on a tape try and get a nearby academic site to grab it off us
and get it off them. I haven't the time to write a lot of tapes.

To Explain things a little better here is the README file.
Core seems to be the old distribution tape stuff - enough to create a
useable system (I've not had time to do this myself yet, though).
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This directory and its subdirectories contain the X Window System, Version 11
Release 2. There are two distributions: a ``core'' distribution, and a
``user-contributed'' distribution. Each distribution comes in two tar files,
one for sources, and one for printable documentation (PostScript and other
files for hardcopy). There is interesting and useful stuff on the
user-contributed distribution; you definitely want the entire thing.

All of the tar file contents are relative to ``.'', and should all be extracted
into the same top-level directory of your choosing. The tar files have been
compressed using the Unix ``compress'' program, and then split into 512000 byte
chunks (with some left over). For each split/compressed/tar file, you will
need to fetch all of the chunks, concatenate the chunks together, uncompress
the result, and then untar the result. Doing all but the fetching in a single
pipe sequence will save you much disk space.

The source for the core distribution is in the subdirectory core.src, in the
files:
	core.src.tar.Z.split.a[a-m]
You will need about 20Mb hold the resulting tree, and about another 15Mb to
build the distribution.

The hardcopy for the core distribution is in the subdirectory core.hc, in the
files:
	core.hc/core.hc.tar.Z.split.a[a-e]
You will need about 7Mb hold the resulting tree.

The source for the user-contributed distribution is in the subdirectory
contrib.src, in the files:
	contrib.src/contrib.src.tar.Z.split.a[a-o]
You will need about 22Mb hold the resulting tree, and perhaps up to 30Mb to
build the distribution, if you build everything.

The hardcopy for the user-contributed distribution is in the subdirectory
contrib.hc, in the files:
	contrib.hc/contrib.hc.tar.Z.split.a[a-d]
You will need about 10Mb hold the resulting tree.

After restoring the core source tar file, you should build and read the release
notes in doc/releasenotes, or else extract the PostScript version from the core
hardcopy tar file and print and read it. But, if you just can't resist, do
"make World >& make.world" at the top level to build the core distribution.

Bug reports (for the core distribution only) should be sent to
"xbugs@expo.lcs.mit.edu". Please use the template provided in
doc/bugs/bug-report.
