I think a new products newsgroup would be great if people actually used it. (We would.) I think however it should be called net.ads, admittedly a break with the grand marketing tradition of doublespeak. In the "What is this newsgroup anyway" message #1, use of more than seven asterisks or exclamation points per message should be discouraged. Exact figures, verifiable prices, and working return addresses (uucp, postal, phone, twx, etc) should be encouraged (breaking with tradition again). John Gilmore, Sun Microsystems (non-marketing)

I think net.ads is a good idea; however, commercial ads should be posted to net.ads *only*. Specificially, posting an ad to a group relayed to the ARPAnet can cause all manner of trouble, up to and including severing the gateway for that group. I don't think anyone can keep track of exactly which groups are forwarded -- I sure can't -- but I know that net.micro, net.works, and net.unix-wizards -- some of the most likely candidates for multiple groups -- are. --Steve Bellovin BTL MH x5886
