[comp.windows.x] XPERT/comp.windows.x info

jim@EXPO.LCS.MIT.EDU (Jim Fulton) (04/12/88)

We're in the process of radically pruning the XPERT mailing list. Individual
and redundant group subscriptions from organizations that already have local
redistribution entries will be moved to local redistributions. By "local",
we mean within a company, university, or other top level entity.

Again, we'd like to remind people that this mailing list is gatewayed into the
Usenet newsgroup comp.windows.x. If you have access to net news, PLEASE READ
IT THERE and submit a removal request to xpert-request@athena.mit.edu. We've
heard some people say "oh, comp.windows.x is a subset of XPERT." This is
dead wrong, they are the same (different order, but same messages).

For future reference, here are the instructions for how to subscribe to an X
mailing list.

    1. Ask around your organization to see if there is already a local
redistribution. If there is, all you have to do is get on the
	list locally.

    2. If there isn't a local redistribution for the list, set one up and
send mail to the appropriate topic-request list with the internet
domain style address for your redistribution.

The goal: to send just one copy of each piece of mail to a given
	company or university.

    3. Mail sent to a topic-request address should have the first word of
the subject line be TOPIC, in caps, so that it can be distinguished.
For example, mail sent to xpert-request should have XPERT be the
first word, and mail sent to lists-request should have LISTS be the
first word. Make sure that the return address to be used is
EXPLICITLY given in the body of the message.

For example,

	% mail xpert-request@athena.mit.edu
	Subject: XPERT addition request

Please add the following address to the xpert mailing list
	for the International Widget Company:

		xpert-local%mumble.widget.com@relay.cs.net
	^D

Case does not matter in mailing list names, although they are stored in
lowercase to make sorting and generating catalogues easier.

UUCP sites that don't have registered domains should give a path relative to
some Internet host (the default will be eddie.mit.edu since it can handle
host!user@eddie.mit.edu or user%host.uucp@eddie.mit.edu).
