How many people are familiar with the book "The Network Nation" and the work of Hiltz and Turoff at New Jersey Institute of Technology? They founded the field of "computer mediated communication" and have performed numerous experiments using EIES, the Electronic Information Exchange System. Most of their work is with social scientists and has not emphasised the software or hardware aspects of communication. A recent paper "Avoiding Information Overload in the Electronic Office" appears in the 16th Hawaii International Conference on Systems Sciences, 1983. Through NJIT and EIES, they are offering "electronic correspondence courses" -human communication via computer -computer literacy: a general approach -local area networks -the science fiction connection -technological forecasting methodology -views of the future by futurists This represents a new use of networks in the educational marketplace. Contact their Division of Continuing Education 201-645-5235 for more info. I'm interested in discussing some of the ideas and studies performed by the "Network Nation" group and applying them to USENET or CSNET activities. (Is net.news the place to do this?)
