I was going through my papers today, and chanced upon this bit of ancient nostalgia (over 21 months old!): USENET Logical Map April 8, 1981 reed phs---unc duke34 | | | | +---+-+--------+-+---+-------duke | | | ucbopt decvax mhtsa research mh135a | | | | | ucbcory | | eagle ihnss vax135 | | | | | | ucbvax--------+-----+--+--+-----+--+------+--------+ | | | | ucbarpa sdcsvax---ucsfcgl menlo70--hao | / | | | ucbonyx phonlab--sdcarl------+ sytek That's only 24 machines (a far cry from today, when it's a challenge to draw a network map that's planar!). This got me thinking: wouldn't it be nice if some of the inventors of netnews (from Duke, Berkeley) would reminisce about the early days of the net? Why it was started, how it grew, etc. Any takers?
