Aside from Frame's desktop publishing package and the promise of the Wingz spreadsheet from Informix, all of the X applications I've heard of are in the engineering/scientific domain. Are there any other non-E/S applications running or planned for X? Jeffrey Stone -------

Chris Bloom and Rob Posadas have been asking about X
applications. Well here's another for the list:
SoftPC, the IBM PC/XT emulator developed by Insignia Solutions
for various workstations is available now, under X on the Tektronix 43xx
series workstations and has been demonstrated under Ultrix on
the VAXstation 3500 and under A/UX on the Macintosh II.
The emulator performs all the functions of an IBM PC/XT, at XT class
or better speeds, including ill behaved programs etc.
The graphics adaptors supported are the MDA and CGA with others
currently being tested before release. All the graphics operations,
either via the BIOS or by accessing the display memory directly
are detected and translated into equivalent X functions. Even
the mouse functions are passed on to the PC so that mouse based
PC applications can be run.
One nice consequence of using X has been the ability to run
SoftPC on one machine and display on another. SoftPC is
currently using X10, but X11 is being worked on.
We'd be interested in discussing with others the difficulties
(and the bits that X made easier) in this and other X based work.
Trademark: SoftPC is a registered trademark of Insignia Solutions
Availability: SoftPC is available for the MacII under MacOS and
various Unix workstations. A port for VAXstations under VMS is coming.
