[comp.windows.x] Decisions, decisions...

mark@drd.UUCP (Mark Lawrence) (06/10/88)

I'm embarking on a project to port one of our current products from the
PC onto a Unix workstation with a bit-mapped graphics display. I've just
about decided to use X11r2 with some variation of a toolkit (either X or
Andrew or maybe both; haven't looked into that part of it enuf to know
what makes sense).

The question I'd like to pose and get responses and opinions on is this:

What would you advise me to do in the area of choice of implementation
language for such a project? Let's say I've got US$5K or so to blow (or
not to blow if it makes sense not to). Is there a combination of
somebody's preprocessor or compiler for some stripe of object oriented C
(C++, Objective C, others?) that I should seriously consider and why?
I'm not asking you to do my work for me here, but if you know something
that I need to watch out for, I'd appreciate the heads up. Are there
neat, nifty combinations of languages and tools for the
Sun / Apollo / microVax / Masscomp class of machines that I should investigate?
Please e-mail your pointers and opinions to me.

Thanks,

Mark
