We've looked into the "Standard" colormap stuff, but there were some problems with the earlier versions of the proposal. We'll look at the ICCCM to see what's specified in the latest rev. -- Charles

One solution would be for the server to make available a portion of the colormap (say, some percent of the unused bins, good neighbor policy requiring that no-one have the whole map). There exist algorithms for mapping from one arbitrary set of colors to another, smaller set, including some authored by yours truly (e-mail me if yer interested). The client process would either permit the server to do the transform on the image, or would be informed that it must do so -- If good results are achieved by mapping from a real-world image of 1M colors to 256 colors, It seems plausible that mapping from 256 to say, 16, could give quite good results. Probably not true for a CAD Line drawing, but then we get into how server and client negotiate how much of the colormap the server is willing to give the client, and at what "cost". -- Michael Sierchio @ SMALL SYSTEMS SOLUTIONS 2733 Fulton St / Berkeley / CA / 94705 (415) 845-1755 sierch@well.UUCP {..ucbvax, etc...}!lll-crg!well!sierch
