[comp.windows.x] Info for X11 on IBM/RT

DAVID@TECMTYVM.BITNET (David Trevino) (06/27/88)

We are in the process to evaluate X-Windows, and we are interested
in running this environment on IBM RT computers.
What do we need in order to run it on RT's? and,
Does it exist some kind of grant to have X-Windows? We are a large
university and we are interested in X-Windows as an environment for
Engineering applications.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I have X11R2 working on RTs (APA-16 and AED displays). This is running on
Mach. I believe IBM has an X11 release for Acis/4.3. I don't know about AIX.

If you are using Berkeley Unix, you should have no trouble running
X.V11R1. In fact, this is part of the IBM distribution of AOS 4.3 Unix.
However, the MIT X Consortium release 2 of X 11 will not even compile on
the RT. I spent several days trying to get it working and finally went
back to R1. Incomplete makefiles for the server and plenty of code in the
toolkit that would not compile let me know that no one had ever tried to
build X before distributing it. On the brighter side, I have been told
(by people who know) that IBM is fixing release 2 and will ship it with
future 4.3 releases. Generally there has been a new release of Unix about
every 6 months, so there should be another one soon (just speculation on
my part).

I'm assuming the question is AIX specific, since 4.3/RT was one of the
original development vehicles for X11.

X10.4 is currently available for AIX/RT. X11 is scheduled to be available for
AIX/RT in September. AIX 2.2.1 and appropriate hardware (e.g., bit mapped
display) are prerequisites for the X11 product ("X Windows 2.1").
