[comp.windows.x] comp.sources.x: current status

mikew@x2.wyse.com (Mike Wexler) (07/19/88)

The current tally is 98 Yes votes, and 1 vote that is yes if I carry
X10 sources and no if I don't. I still haven't decided whether I
should carry X10 sources. If someone is willing to test them for me
I would probably be willing to accept them. Since they will be
processed by someone else they may get posted slower. If you want
to see this group get created, please send your vote now. At the
end of this article there is a list of the people who I have received
Yes votes from. If there are any mistakes, please send me mail.
Please send me source to post. It is likeley the group will be created,
and I would like to have something to send out.

Several people have offered to become archive sites. I have listed
each of the people that have offered to archive comp.sources.x.
If you would like to be an archive site, please contact me. Also
there are a group of people who are going to archive the X
distribution and other stuff. They will probably also archive this
newsgroup if it gets created.

I don't think it's necessary to post a list of "yes" votes to xpert, getting
Gene or Mark to agree that it's a "good thing" should be enough (you can show
them the "yes" list if necessary). I also think you've left out the Canadian archive
site(s), which should annoy the Canadian archive coordinator somewhat considering
the number of times he's posted "Yes! Me! I'll do it!" messages to both of us.

I apologize to the Internet readers of this message. It's aimed primarily
at the Usenix side of the list.

Gene (Spafford) is on vacation right now; Mark (Horton) doesn't really get
that involved with newgroup proposals these days. In either case, someone
from the backbone simply agreeing that it's a "good thing" is _not_ enough
to get a group created (nor is enough to keep a group from being created if
the BB thinks a group is a "bad thing").

Posting the "yes" vote list is nec'y because of the basic unreliability of
mail. If someone voted "yes" and did not see their name on the list, they
would know to send another vote. Posting them here in comp.windows.x is
approp- riate, since it's the only related group in Usenet right now. I
didn't check, but if the "yes vote list" wasn't cross-posted to news.groups,
it should have been. That's common practice.

Again, I apologize to the Internet contingent of this list; Usenet is in an
unstable state right now and I wanted to make sure that Jordan's innocent
confusion about the newgroup process didn't lead to any further confusion.

That's all well and good, but suppose a good number of people aren't interested
in seeing this information when there's an excellent chance of seeing
it replicated a number of times? Just trying to cut down on the
signal-to-noise ratio... Perhaps it could be mailed directly to the
interested parties?

I also don't see how the "yes" votes are going to directly result in the
creation of the newsgroup. Perhaps someone would care to explain the
voting process to me? Via mail? Enough said on this subject.. This list
is approaching critical mass.
